I've read recently another article about potential opportunities in building
802.11 mesh networks. Besides OpenAP, is there is something out there that
allows to build mesh networks? Wanted to try, but could not find any
software.
Please advise

Try the MeshAP from locustworld (can't remember their site, so google it. I think it is a .uk site or a .org). Its a fully bootable linux CD distro that implements ad-hoc mesh.
