This may sound stupid but, can a PDA's and smaller 802.11 devices connect directly to an AP?
Yes, they can. For example, the HP iPaq with appropriate hardware can connected to an 802.11b network. These devices are the ones shown in the T-Mobile posters at Starbucks.
Here's one configuration that works:
HP iPaq + PC card sleeve + 802.11b wireless card
In addition to PC Cards (PCMCIA) There are also manufacturers who offer 802.11b wireless cards in Compact Flash and even SD (secure digital) sizes.
