I'm trying to receive my wireless 802.11b signal in a building 300 feet away through trees.

I've read about Yagi antennas homemade from cans. Is the diameter of the can important, or only the length and placement of the wire extending into the can. Is it worth building vs. buying?

Take a look at these. http://flakey.info/antenna/waveguide/ http://osiris.urbanna.net/antenna_designs/projects/template/ http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/cantenna/cantenna.htm

Cantennas are really easy to make. The mesh parabolas only slightly less so. That first link has a calculator and tables for all the critical dimensions of a Cantenna. I can personally recommend whisky bottle cans (such as The Famous Grouse) as they have an internal diameter of about 85mm which puts them slap in the middle of the 802.11b band. They're also about 1 wavelength long. Most of the dog food cans are not nearly long enough and it's quite surprising they work as well as they do.

Any of these should get you the 300ft with no problems as long as the trees aren't *too* dense.
