Brian,

I too wrestle with WAP11's for multi-mile links, the longest being five
miles. When you say the link is "painfully slow" I assume you are meaning
speeds in the tens of kilobits/sec. I think the problem is likely to be one
of signal strength or interference. Have you monitored the percentage of
dropped packets for send and receive from the WAP11's status tab? 90 percent
or more of your packets may be dropped, cutting your speed to a crawl. If
the problem is a power issue, using the hyperlinktech product may not help
as it transmits about the same power as a WAP11. The receiver sensitivity
specification was not mentioned so it may be better than an WAP11 in that
regard.

Here are a few issues to consider:
How much power loss are you getting from your antenna cable?
Have you tried changing the polarization of your antennas, (e.g. horz to
vert, vert to horz)

If I understand the FCC rules correctly, the 35 milliwatt output of a WAP11
used point-to-point with 24dbi antennas can be amplified by 8 db to 250
milliwatts and still be legal. More applification can be added to compensate
for antenna cable losses. I think an amplifier would solve your speed
problem.

Loren Zemenick

Subject: [BAWUG] Need recommendation for wireless bridge unit

About 3 weeks ago I posed a question on this forum about a wireless bridge.
I have set up a wireless bridge using two Linksys WAP11's over a 10 mile
link using a couple 24dBi antennas that I am certain have the proper height
needed. The connection functions, but is painfully slow. Several people
responded stating they believed it was a timing issue that is probably not
correctable using simple devices like the WAP11's.

So I have decided to purchase new bridge units, but I am hoping someone can
recommend some good units for me. Cost is a strong factor since this link
is for a small school district to get decent internet speed to a school in a
very small community that has only dial-up available. I was hoping someone
may have some experience with this device
http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/h-soho.php as it is within our budget and
from the product description, it appears will do the job we need. If anyone
has any other reasonably priced bridges they have had good luck with, I
would like to hear about those too.

Thank You,
Brian Taylor
