using 2 x orinico silver / gold cards Is this possible and is there a
distro that's designed to do this or similar?

Definitely. Seattle Wireless lists several distros at
http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/MiniOs. I'm running Pebble
Linux, which is a stripped-down Debian Linux perfect for Soekris boards
and similar. See http://www.nycwireless.net/pebble
