I believe that if you map out the radiation pattern of the radio signal
you'll see that if the AP is too close to a reflective surface, the radio
wave isn't orthogonal enough to get through the glass. So if you move it
away [depending on the power of the antennas and signal], it gives the
singal enough room and time to straighten out orthogonally and not reflect
off the glass surface.

But that's my experience..
