Actually - the link we have from:

        http://www.wirelessleiden.nl/wcl/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/NodeJacob
        http://www.wirelessleiden.nl/fotos/torenmolen10.jpg

into the polder is a bit over 10 miles. The left square antenna is a 17
dBi PA 3030:

        http://www.gandalf.nl/paneelantennes.htm#PA3030

and we initially tested this 12 mile link with a 28mWatt linksys AP on the
tower end; and an Orinoco Gold card, which output some 60mWatt if I recall
correctly, on the church tower on the other end. Connected on that end to
a 3030 or a 4040. And that worked just fine.

So my guess is - good antenna alignment and proper cables help a lot. And
of course as soon as you have any multi path issues - then the lower the
power the better.
