If you can, try borrowing someone's Orinoco or Cisco card. Some of the cheaper Intersil based cards have fair-to-average recieve sensitivity, and can vary quite a lot for no aparent reason. You might have better luck with another one of the same card, or you might be better off with a better quality card.
