From page 2 of appendix A of the rule change:
| section 2.932 Modification of equipment
| * * * * *
| (e) Manufacturers must take steps to ensure that only software
| that has been approved with a software defined radio
| can be loaded into such a radio. The software must not
| allow the user to operate the transmitter with frequencies,
| output power, modulation types or other parameters outside of
| those that were approved. Manufacturers may use authentication
| codes or any other means to meet these requirements, and must
| desdribe the methods in their application for equipment authoriazation.
It seems to me that the FCC is not requiring closed
source or even unbreakable countermeasures, but just that
manufacturers "take steps to ensure [etc.]". In fact, page 10
of the discussion portion, paragraph 30, talks a bit about
using digital signatures.
If the current crop of 802.11a/b/g chips are
subject to these resrictions, I would be interested in seeing
the applications for equipment authorization to see what
exactly are being claimed as the steps that the manufacturers
are taking.
Does anyone here know what the process would be to
get copies of the applicatiosn for equipment authorization?
