Actually, Ross, I like the idea - and it may not be far away - 802.11x
SIP phones (look in google for FWD just as a starting point - these guys
have a neat perspective on communications - fwd stands for free world dialup)
are showing up (a tad expensive, but things will drop). Today they look
like cordless phones designed around a pcmcia card :-)

You can use them with your AP and make VOIP calls from the handset
through the AP and to your provider of choice.

Phone co's better get on the ball with good DSL packages - I can see
a day when voice is a "dont want" service - just gimme the net and
a service guarantee and I'll shop around for phone service.

It's happening now! Our local telco is putting in 7 new "substations"
that are fiber fed neighborhood centric mini-COs (imagine burrying 2
of those big 40' tractor trailer cargo containers 30 feet beow grade).
They get the right of way in the median of the freeway or some street
with a wide sidewalk and drop in a new co/DSLAM - suddenly people who
were 25,000 feet are now 1,205 feet from their "new" C.O. And enjoying
6 Mbps download speeds/ 128 up. Oh yea - the underground COs are not
metal like the cargo containers - they're reenforced cement walled!

My WISP services old GTE land - I've had customers want VOIP simply
because they could never get a clear sounding dialtone from GTE and
support was awful. My link was always up - their phones were always
questionable. That started me looking into what I could offer over
VOIP - and the answer was PLENTY! It's now in the works as a product.
