Machine probably had AOL 5.0 on it. Uninstall aol if it is installed
(install / uninstall the latest version of aol if the uninstall
fails), get your windows 98 cd handy, boot to safe mode; tear out all
the network drivers out of the networking applet. All of them. Reboot.

You probably have a couple sets of ghost drivers in device manager
too, remove any hardware from device manager that isn't plugged into
the laptop.
Reboot normally 3x w/o any networking devices (i.e. hardware plugged
in) installed to clear out the hardware registry or whatever - I don't
know the reason behind it, but it does work.
If windows prompt you to install a hardware device when one isn't in
the slot, save yourself an ulcer and just reinstall windows.

Netgear�s support is useless except to hassle when you are drunk, in
which case they are rather amusing to talk to. . .

My message was not included in my last posting so here we go again.�
Does Win 98 first edition have a problem with wireless?� A friend has
a PII laptop with Windows 98 first edition on it.� She bought a
Netgear 802.11b card and 3 technicians were unable to install it.� So
I tried and it show up but does not install.� Any suggestions?
