Has anyone used the spare pairs in an Ethernet cable for the purpose of getting an RS-232 connection to some remote device? I have a Soekris on a 50' tower in my back yard that is refusing to boot. I get a link light on my switch, so I know it's powering up but I can't ping it. I've got to bring it down tomorrow and while I have it, I want to try and rig up some sort of console over ethernet connection so I can always get in to the console port if the ethernet doesn't come up.
I have a Cisco switch which came with a console adapter that has an RJ-45 connector on one side and a DB9 on the other. That's basically what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure if the pins would need to be crossed. If they do need to be crossed I assume I could just do that at either end with a null modem adapter.
