As we expand from our single neighborhood project to SoCal-wide (nothing like being ambitious), we'd like to follow the BAWUG/SFLan lead and standardize on a kit that does relay and AP. Based on the experiences of NoCat's deployment and recent comments on this list and for maximum onsite flexibility, we're inclined to house the radios in two separate boxes but want one standard kit to use either as the relay or AP.
