As we expand from our single neighborhood project to SoCal-wide (nothing
like being ambitious), we'd like to follow the BAWUG/SFLan lead and
standardize on a kit that does relay and AP. Based on the experiences of
NoCat's deployment and recent comments on this list and for maximum
onsite flexibility, we're inclined to house the radios in two separate
boxes but want one standard kit to use either as the relay or AP. We've
come up with the following shopping list for a complete kit (relay + AP).
A nicely formatted version with links to items is at

Specific questions: + Thoughts on the Soekris net4501 with a hacked POE and miniPCI radio
instead?
+ Do we need lightening protection on the relay Yagi/patch too? Paranoia?
+ Should we use LMR400 instead of LMR195 for short (<5') runs? Overkill?
+ Anything left out or other comments?

Hi Michael,

In place of using a NEMA enclosure, you can probably get away with something a bit more generic. I use 10x10x6 outdoor plastic junction boxes and have had good luck with them. You can pick them up at any electrical supply house for about $25, usually home depot doesn't stock them that large. The one I have here doesn't have a brand name on it, but if you elect to go this route make sure you get a heavy duty box. I have a cheaper box made of thinner plastic and it doesn't give me the warm fuzzy feeling I need to put >$500 of electronics in it. :)

HTH,
Fred
