Yep, both the WISP-Dist and LiunxAP distributions both fit in an 8MB
space.  The LinuxAP dist can fit in 2MB space for running on an older
Eumitcom motherboard.

The problem here is that x86 binaries tend to be 30% smaller on average
than PowerPC binaries.  Still, I imagine with 8MB of RAM and 1MB of
flash you could get a working distribution.

The AirportLinux distro at Seattle Wireless fits on an Airport or an
RG-1000, and those have 4MB of RAM.  With that space, you have to boot
from the network and load the firmware from an NFS server.  That
approach could also be taken with these units.
