"The NICC received a report of "chemical detonations" in Port Iberia, LA. We contacted the LA State EOC, LA State Police, and the Port Iberia EOC. There have been NO detonations. There is a HAZMAT situation at a port facility concerning several containers of aluminum oxide that are partially submerged in water as a result of Hurricane Rita. The chemical is reacting with the water and the containers are heating up. Officials on the scene state the containers will either vent or explode if the temperatures continue to climb. There is a precautionary evacuation of one-quarter of a mile (the area is sparsely populated). Officials are continuing to monitor. This chemical is a slight skin, eye and respiratory irritant, according to MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). The NICC is in contact with officials on scene and will monitor the event."
