All,

I thought everyone would be interested in knowing what the breakdown of broadband users were in the world and why people sign up for it according to the following article.

As quoted from the article.

The number of broadband subscribers in the world has grown almost ten-fold in the past four years. Most of this growth can be attributed to the Asian region, which currently represents 47% of all broadband subscribers in the world. However, broadband services in India have not yet really taken off. At the end of August 2005, there were about 1.7 million broadband subscribers in India. Broadband penetration is, of course, dependent upon PC penetration as a major factor. India lags behind other major countries of the region by a substantial margin. However, Trai has identified broadband as the next focus area and has forecasted 20 million subscribers by 2010 and 40 million subscribers by 2020.

With these optimistic numbers, we come to the issue of what will really drive the growth in broadband and internet subscriptions? In a recent survey, nearly 40% of broadband subscribers cited content as a major reason for adopting high speed digital broadband services, indicating the growing importance of content. In a film driven country like India, entertainment content like movie clips, television serials, games, music and mobisodes will drive growth of online digital broadband thereby making content owners the most powerful stakeholders in the country.
