facto/ standard, and keeping a copy around is, I'd argue, just a cost

I disagree of course. OpenOffice works just fine for sharing documents
with other Office users. Sometimes like in this case, complicated Office
files that are interactive don't work. In all of those cases --including
this one-- a workaround was offered.
I don't really have a problem with the price of Office; just the monopoly.
