Marlon, I gotta say- this is beyond cool. I'm linked up, 5 outta 5 bars, sittin' in a metal trailer, in the middle of a cowfield outside of Odessa, wa, and checkin' my email and ebay and Stumpjumpers info and whatever else I feel like. awesome. thanks again, man...

"real antennas and cables are cheap."
yeah, I know- but towers are not! or maybe they are, hell, I don't know! 18 miles is awesome.

mks: LOL, buildings on the top of a hill are mostly what I use. Trading out an account to a farmer in exchange for a bit of electricity sure helps keep the costs down.

but ...can you cook a lasagne in front of the transmitter dish??

mks: Nope. We're allowed less radio output than your cell phone. In fact, counting the antenna gain I'm only legally allowed 4 watts at the base station. Most of my customer end gear is under 30 watts.

is your trailer easy to spot? I've already told one riding buddy about your wifi setup, and he's bringing his laptop, too...

mks: It's the really little one up on the top of the hill overlooking everything. I put a picnic table in in case people can't get the signal from down in their campers.

grin

real antennas and cables are cheap. I've got links that pull nearly a meg at 18 miles!

Stop up at the trailer on the hill and say hello if you get a chance.

well, I'm pretty geeky, too- but I've also had a dirt bike for a couple decades!
you have to have a balance, after all...
well, congrats on finishing on a borrowed machine...! I think you should do the same this year... (and 10 miles- that's awesome! I made some parabolic cardboard/foam/tin-foil signal boosters for my friend's house/shop link- but it only had to go a few hundred feet...!)

well, that's a great contribution! thank you in advance for that, Marlon...

mks: Glad to help.

now, from poking around on your site- I'm assuming you have a sequence of towers to get the signal out there from wherever-it's-coming-from? (never been to Odessa myself, so I'm not sure how far out the King property is)

mks: That's correct. It's about 10 miles from town.

I just sold my good laptop- but I have an old klunker win98 laptop with a usb wireless card, so- should be good...!

mks: Yeppers. Park as close to the entry way to the race as you can get :-)

(...are you going to have a dirtbike out there, too, and join in that madness?!? )

mks: I don't have a bike. I ran the 100 last year. I'm told I'm the first local to finish the race! Bout killed me. I'm a computer geek after all. On a borrowed bike! grin

keep those power supplies hummin'...!

mks: For sure!

          ~Reuben

ps- maybe you would know- does a Verizon phone work out there?? NOW I'm probably asking for too much...!

mks: Believe it or not, it should work.

See ya soon.

HI Reuben,

Yesterday, it didn't. Somehow blew a power supply on one of the radios. Hope that's not gonna be a habit this year! grin

You'll be able to use your laptop. If it won't work from your trailer just come up to mine and sit on the table I set up. The network is called "free" and it is just that. Free.

I hope that helps!
