This is what I do, but I will add that we get the APC SmartUPS models that can take an SNMP card. The SU700 or SU1000. We put an AP9617 in it (has more features than the AP9605). This emails you to notify you of a power event. Then you have your *howevermany* hours to deal with the outage. You can also reboot the site remotely. Where we have alot of equipment we'll add a PDU to be able to power off items selectively instead of the whole site.
