A friend who worked on a fishing boat who handled long lines and fishing nets taught me if you have a mass of rope like that never try to untie what looks like knot because you'll actually be tying knots. Try to work the rope apart, pulling loops of rope through places where it's tangled, but never pass the end through tangles.
