If you only have time to visit one neighborhood that will cover most of
this, you probably want The Loop (Delmar, between Skinker and Kingsland,
give or take a block). ucityloop.com. A number of music venues, several
restaurants, and a few wacky shops. Free parking can be found at Kingsland
and Delmar, on the west end of the strip, so don't get suckered into the
five-dollar parking garage in the middle. For food, Riddles Penultimate is
hit-or-miss (the menu changes literally daily) but usually more hit than
miss. Blueberry Hill has one of the best burgers you'll ever have, and the
Tivoli has kooky indie movies most weekends.

If you just want a good meal, try South Grand (on, um, South Grand, between
Arsenal and Utah). Less music, more international food. Whatever you're
looking for, there's probably one near there.

There's a few "nightlife" type things in Westport Plaza, including a comedy
club. westportstl.com.

For hardcore shopping, of the sort many wives will enjoy, go to either the
Galleria or the West County mall; those are the biggest and best. I'm sure
the fact that both of these malls have Apple Stores, and that I'm craving an
iPhone 4, is purely coincidental and my suggestion is not in any way
influenced by this.

Downtown: has almost nothing exciting, generally. That's where all the
sporting venues are, but the only sport in-season right now is baseball (and
I'm not even sure if the Cardinals are home or away during this little
shindig). If you're into nightclubbing there are a few choices on Washington
Avenue, but that's not my scene so I can't make specific recommendations.
