It really comes down to if you need to push a lot of PPS.  If your typical
load is under a few hundred meg/s and you just need performance with typical
traffic, then a software based solution is fine.  If you need line card
redundancy, hitless failover of CPU's and hardware based forwarding of
IPv4/6/MPLS+TE then the major vendors come into play.  If you just need to lob
some bits down the pipe for users and servers, I can't find a compelling
reason to buy a hardware based router, other than ease of use.

It's like comparing an Alvarion B100 to an ALU 6ghz 200mbit full duplex hop. 
Both fine solutions, but not to the same problem.
