It really comes down to if you need to push a lot of PPS. If your typical load is under a few hundred meg/s and you just need performance with typical traffic, then a software based solution is fine. If you need line card redundancy, hitless failover of CPU's and hardware based forwarding of IPv4/6/MPLS+TE then the major vendors come into play. If you just need to lob some bits down the pipe for users and servers, I can't find a compelling reason to buy a hardware based router, other than ease of use. It's like comparing an Alvarion B100 to an ALU 6ghz 200mbit full duplex hop.
