Ryan,

As others have implied, hams are often amenable to an agreement where you don't charge them anything but it's not unusual for you to get some non-monetary service in exchange, such as

1. Free technical advice, or

2. Use of a spectrum analyzer, when needed, or

3. A no-charge permanent use of a transceiver that works on their repeater (once you have your ham license), or

4. You-name-it. What type of help can you use?
