For us it was efficient use of hardware. With OpenVZ / LXC we can run containers with negligible decrease in performance (less than 3% in our testing) and still get the needed isolation. Now with LXC they have lost live migration, so that stinks but they keep claiming it will return. We have been running a cluster for years and it works very well. We have 10G private storage network and do a lot of ZFS / iSCSI.
