Alvin,
I would definitely construct a pathological set of locations and have
vendors send you units to put at each end. You can then pull IP loads thru
the links while looking at thruput, outage time and latency. A mix of
streaming video, VoIP, bursty data traffic and large file transfers both
directions from all remotes to centrals is the best. Try to verify any QoS
claims.

Also get access to any internal radio diagonistics like retransmission
rates and error rates that may not show up in the net thruput. Make sure to
set up adjacent channels. Try to estimate how fast your signals are dropping
off with range. You may have zones that the attenuation is so great you end
up with no link margin.

Find out the FEC block size since there can be optimal data packet lengths
for retransmission and thruput. Some systems will be limited by the number
of packets per second before they hit the specified capacity. Other systems
may only hit capacity with a small number of remotes and moderate sized
packets. Check on the performance claims first.

Mesh products are good since you can have repeater characteristics in your
favor. You want to keep the number of hops down and make sure there is a
good T/R coordination mechanism. The issue is keeping the highway links up
all the time. I have seen companies subsidize backup batteries and monthly
rates for early adoptors at crucial locations who allow their units to stay
on to relay others and act as monitors.

You should be able to come up with a reasonable business model of the
deployment costs based on the test results from above. Also include any
routers needed to support the protocols and security you implement.

Typically the installations and roof rights are higher than the equipment
cost when you add up the first couple of years so you want to get as much
out of a single roof as possible or find a cheaper, non-traditional
deployment scenario.

Our requirement is basically to provide service coverage in a highly
populated city. LOS could be difficult in a city which is why I m
evaluating NLOS products. But then again i had not heard from anybody
who commented highly on any NLOS products as they had failed to live
up to many expectations. What do you think of the current reliability
of NLOS products
