hey erj,
you could check the NS2 source for a linux 802.11 MAC
implementation.it is a good start, though it may not
be the most optimised.
for the baseband its far easier to read the std. and
do your own thing, i doubt you'll get any (free)
software implementations other than the basic
algorithms (like barker/grey coding,cck,crcs for 11b
and convolution,viterbi,fft for 11a).
regarding your MAC development on an FPGA,you can
start without the PHY chipset obviously , but at some
point you will have to decide on the interface
strategy between your PHY and your MAC.
