You are correct and I should have clarified this. However, the independent nature of the MAC and the PHY standards still stand. Note that 802.11g does not define any new MAC layer technology. It only defined a new use for something that was already defined in the standard. The original MAC standard defines an optional RTS-CTS frame exchange before a data frame to reserve the channel. What 802.11g did was to re-use this same mechanism and change it slightly to reserve the channel when older 802.11b devices are present. This is very different than the extensive MAC changes proposed in 802.11e (QoS) or 802.11i (Security) that re-define the fundamentals of the MAC layer.
