For what it's worth, MS have decided to renege on their "Metro development only" plans for the next version of Visual Studio Express, if http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2012/06/08/visual-studio-express-2012-for-windows-desktop.aspx is to be believed.
I haven't had chance to investigate the new tools, though.
