I tend to differ. As has been pointed out by other posters to the mailing
list, the true value of attending a dev converence will always be personal
exchange, contacts, and socialising. Also, a presentation paper is just
that--a paper to be used by a presentator. I have yet to find a slide show /
presentation that is completely self-sufficient and will bring over the
points completely without an actual presentation going on. For me, such
hand-outs and materials as found on the CD-ROM are always mementos. Without
the actual presentation, they are perhaps 50-70% as useful. Hence, there's
always an incentive to attend converences, IMO. Also, having the opportunity
to talk to the presentator on the side is something I really don't want to
miss.
