Alex,
a couple of threads in the past have discussed this:

Klaus Sonneleiter said:
"Postgres. It's scalable, it's free, it supports all the standards a true
database should support (unlike mySQL) and you get the source."

Also, Scott said this:
"Recently I came across this link:
http://www.commandprompt.com
This company offers some interesting PostgreSQL related products as well
their own quesi-xml style web-application platform, although it is very
limited in functionality compared to Witango.
Also, it looks like the entire "Practical PostgreSQL" book (published by
O'Reilly) is on-line here."

John Newsom put up a comparison of some SQL databases here (not big
expensive ones or open source)
http://jnewsom.home.attbi.com/SQLdb.html

Jason Pamental wrote this:
"This was in a recent e-week issue, and addresses performance of 4 different
db engines... Very interesting reading!
http://www.eweek.com/article/0,3658,s=702&a=23115,00.asp

Also, one rather subjective response on Postgres: we used it on a site a
couple years ago on a dual p2 266 el cheapo machine running
solaris/php/postgres on a site that got at its peak over 2 million page
views/month with db access on every page. We absolutely never ever had a
problem with db lag, and the site performance was exceptional. All told the
hardware and software for that project cost about $2000, the only software
being $700 for a copy of Solaris 2.6. Not scientific, but certainly an
indication of a pretty solid performer..."

Also Jason followed up with:
"MySQL Ive found to be pretty easy to work with, but another one to consider
would be Primebase its out for OS X, has Mac ODBC drivers available, is
pretty affordable (licenses start around $500 I think) and you can learn
lots more about it from Robert Garcia. Hes been a tremendous help to us."

Jose Kuhn reckons:
"There is also Frontbase http://www.frontbase.com. I have been very pleased
with Primebase though!! The installation on Mac OS X is a pain though."

I am sure you'll get some more serious feedback from these people as they
come online.
Garth
