Alex, I read this article in eWeek a few months ago and I think it will answer a lot of questions about mySQL. I havent been using it for too long, and am frustrated by its lack of a good gui admin tool (there are a few out there shareware type things around $50-100 or so, but not too many that are really good), BUT it does seem to have the horsepower and ability now to support transactions to make it a viable option. Another open-source alternative that is VERY fast and has been ported to X is PostgreSQL. Another good alternative thats a very easy db to work with is Primebase, which Robert G. has helped develop a front-end for. Weve used all 3 of these options very successfully (on windows and mac).
