Firmware is embedded software that is contained in a non-volatile memory in a product. Usually in a ROM, meaning the hardware must be physically upgraded to change the software. Some ROMs are re-programmable, but usually the products using these do not supply the voltages needed to reprogram. Higher end products will use Flash memory that allows re-programming with lower voltages, making it possible for the product to reprogram itself.
