I'm not sure this is what you are after but I tried this.
<@ASSIGN name="first" value="Paul" scope="local">
<@ASSIGN name="last" value="Storey" scope="local">
<@ASSIGN name="server" value="@msfc.nasa.gov" scope="local">
<@ASSIGN name="email" value="@@local$first<@CHAR 95>@@local$last@@local$server" scope="local">
@@local$email which gives [EMAIL PROTECTED]
When my server tried to send the email I received this message. This makes me think the server did not remove the underscore.

The underscore is not IN the variable, it is between 2 variables that form the email address: @@first_@@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Mail action for some reason does not read this underscore, it removes it as it would remove a space between 2 words. But <@CHAR 95> does the trick.

I've done this hundreds of times, and never had a problem saving any type of
character in a variable.
