Thanks for that info

I have found that a search prefixed by = in the TAF works the same as an == search in 
Filemaker. == is Field Content Match and = is Exact Match - whatever they mean

Leaving the system as it is will potentially cause problems if there is a 20-character 
limit. I could assume the passwords will always be different and key on password _and_ 
username on a search

But it's not ideal in any way...
