actualy Ted, i bet when you use paging lets say you want records 10,000 to 10,100 results, i think it has to "qualify" all the results up to 10,000 even though you only get the 100 records.
if you think about it like if i tell you to grab all books from the library where the authors name contains "o", but i only want results 100-110, your still gonna have to identify the first 100 books even though you only give me the 10 results right? i think the database is having the same issue. to speed things up you can try to add indexes to your table on the columns that are being searched by. For me this process is a little bit of trial and error because sometimes when i add indexes it doesnt affect the search at all and every now and then it actualy makes it slower!
