There's a warning out that you should NOT do a Panther install with a  
Firewire external drive (and possibly any other type of external  
drive). Apparently there's a good chance you'll "fry" the drive (as far  
as OS X is concerned). Another person reported that OS 9 could mount  
the drive, apparently unharmed. But OS X could not.

So that kind of leaves out the install on external drives for now. Use  
a partition...

That's why some of us always partition our discs ;-). Let's you put
your toe in the water and then jump back if it's too hot or cold.
