the update making a mess of a table happens when you update a record
that matches a UID, but the UID is missing and it runs through and
updates a mess of them. I recall making that mistake once.

Me too. Hundreds, nay thousands of them. And they seem to work more

very well.
But I recently ran a photo competition that got 50,000 entries over
10 days.
At one point 7000 records had been "Updated" with the same info.
Fortunately
I had a text version of the entries too.
