Hey Beverly, No worries, never took it personally. I've been HTML'ing since 1994, and wrote a few courses on it.
New browsers won't choke without the new code (<br /) but it is especially handy when a user uses the back button in the browser. Without the label tags, you have a 2 in 10 chance that the form won't remember the values, with the label tag it does. I also program in ASP.net and have encountered the same issues there. Nice thing is you can define xslt style sheets to handle a lot of the back-end stuff. HTML is constantly changing, and it seems new tags pop up every week! I've tested IE 7 on Windows Vista, and all I can say is that I am impressed. But, a lot of the old stuff doesn't seem to work well. Java applets are just one thing that don't work well in IE 7. Let's not even get into the open tags without a close tag or as an empty tag and deprecated elements and attributes! I work in a text editor not a WYSIWYG. But I still take the time to make the code a little cleaner and more 'new school'. The old browsers may ignore the "extra" stuff (<br />), but the new browsers may choke without it. I try to make the HTML (as in standard 4.01) more clean (regardless of using any XHTML stuff). It's easier to read and find mistakes or to find what the browser doesn't like.
