No, bagging the XHTML isn't the solution. It's really handy for autocomplete and accessibility and keeping your form values when a user clicks the back button.
However, this publicized bug in IE from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314279&Product=iep Does give the resolution to work around the bug. If it's accessibility you're going for, then the ALT tag is still your best bet.
