Hi Stefan,
I thought I started this thread, but yes you
prompted on 10.15.08. In a certain sense it
has elicited some thoughtful discussion on
communication and the importance of the developer
base; on the other hand it's started a 'migration
party' dialogue which should be taken to Robert's
list or offline.
I have given a lot of thought to this thread
and came to my own conclusions:
1. Time is my most valuable asset, and I assume
everyone else's, so thank you to everyone that
contributes your time to this list. It's
invaluable, and realistically, you are the
main technical support for this product.
2. Witango 5.5 is a great product. For all the
talk about other languages, no one has found
a better IDE for rapid application development.
(Yes, I know their are other products that scale
better.)
3. I believe it was Scott, that said use what works
for you. To that end I plan to continue to use
Witango, as back to my initial comment, it saves
me time and allows us to crank out projects.
If I would have listened to everyone that told
me to stop using a Mac, I would be a grumpy
Windows user bitching about Vista. I'm not and
I'm happy to continue to use a platform that works
for me. I've used tango/witango for over 10 years.
We even used it serve millions of humor lovers
every month on jokes.com before we sold it to
ComedyCentral. That was done initially on a Butler
db, later switched to Oracle, with three or four
tango front ends. So it can scale if structured
properly. We still use it on Colleges.com,
Campaign.com, and Employment.com(in beta). So if
I can create an application and it works reliably
for 10 years, I have a great deal of comfort in
the language and product I created it in, witango.
Last thought on using what works for you -
if you create for your own projects, who cares
what someone else is using as long as witango can
do what you want it to do.
4. Multiplatform capabilities are a big plus for Witango.
This was one of the most important decisions for me
when picking tango in the first place. While I
develop on the Mac I want to be able to deploy to
multiple platforms which gives us the most flexibility.
We migrated some of our tango/witango apps from running
on Solaris to OSX, and with a few minor tweaks, they
ran perfectly.
5. Program with your eyes wide open. Yes, it's smart
to know what other options are out there and to keep
abreast of the current state of technologies. I know,
I started my career off getting a Novel certified Network
Engineer education which was the hottest networking tech
and dominant network platform in it's time. Certainly
not now. So this dialogue about different platforms is
interesting and helpful, but I'm staying with witango,
but proceeding forward with my eyes wide open to other
possibilities.
6. Phil must share the information. I hate to use a line
from Godfather, but the temptation is too much:
Emilio Barzini:
[during a meeting with the Five Families] Times have changed.
It's not like the Old Days, when we can do anything we want.
A refusal is not the act of a friend. If Don Corleone has
all the judges, and the politicians in New York, then he must
share them, or let us others use them. He must let us draw
the water from the well. Certainly he can present a bill for
such services; after all... we are not Communists.
Phil, <@Please> share the information - tell the list a
realistic timeline for witango 6 to come out. At least
give us a quarter, but preferably even more definition.
We now understand that you need to replace some of the server
code in order to make it open source. If it takes longer
we'll understand, but it will give many on this list
hope and direction.
I mean this with all due respect : )
John

Yes, Please give us info.
I just had to make a decision to not recommend
witango to a new large client because I had no
information to give them regarding the road map
for witango. This is not something I wanted to do.
I love witango, but would prefer to not be planning
for our future web development in the dark.
Product roadmaps and timelines even if they are
approximate are essential.
Please give us a real update.
Thanks
John
