Hi GEzra,
John had me test our the problem you were having and see if I could
replicate in our system that's set up with Tiny MCE.
check out the following text as displayed via a webpage:
Here is the source code that MCE put into the DB (note the URL
encoding for the special characters:
I would try using TinyMCE but not use the copy from word function.
I copied it using the web page you gave us.
Hope that helps,

Hi John,
Running Oracle 10g R2 on WinXP. Witango is Xserve (non-intel),
connection is made using OCI.
Just as a test try copying the contents of this press release:
http://www.fujitsu.com/br/news/pr/20070531.html
Especially the quotations (TinyMCE's MS copy/paste will fix this)
but the words "Para maiores informações, veja também" (Eng/
Brazilian mix?) breaks it.
Also, URLENCODE breaks for instance if you try to copy over a
certain length (try copying and pasting couple of paragraphs
twice); empty field in the database.
I did look into TinyMCE and used it for its MS copy/paste
function, its a great tool.

What version of Oracle are you using?
What platform are you on?
IF you want to take this off list you
can email me some of the utf-8 text
as an example of give me a page to
go to to get it. I can do some tests
here where we might be able to find
a solution. If so, we can then post
the solution back to the list.
We just did a test and copied utf-8
into our db without any problems.
Also you can use a free utility TinyMCE
which would urlencode any special
characters when they are entered.

Good question! Clients are starting to copy/paste stuff from their
websites (utf-8 encoded pages) into our database, turns out as
garbage
on Oracle with 8859-1 encoding. Therefore, I created a test
instance
with AL32UTF8 encoding and inserted some data using SQLDeveloper,
works great but not so good when inserted or read from Witango/OCI.
Also tested with a Witango/jdbc connection, same thing.
However, I am
told that its possible to tell jdbc which is using what so it will
translate but not able to find any info that.

Just a thought, but is this a new database
instance that can be recreated?
We have used Oracle 8 and Oracle 10
and never had any problems. That must
be because the default is 8859-1. Did
you specifically want utf-8?

Hi Robert!
new cipher of UTF-8? what is this?
I tried leaving witango/apache to 8859-1 and oracle/oci to utf-8
but I
don't think that worked, instead of "?" it came out with "?"
surrounded by a diamond! :) Tried some oracle built-in
functions as
well but you are right its Witango that's causing this but for
the
moment I'm just looking for some workarounds.
thanks!

Witango currently only speaks ISO 8859-1. You can try
experimenting
with new cipher of UTF-8.
Your db driver/mechanism should be translating from 8859-1 from
witango to utf-8 in oracle, and back out. If you are having an
issue, the best way to start is see if you can tell the db
driver/
mechanism that witango is using 8859-1, and so it will do the
translating. If you try doing the translating on the witango
side,
you may end up pulling your hair out.

Hello everyone! :-) (yes, I'm still cooking witango)
Oracle is setup as a UTF8 database (incl. local client)
When writing/reading data using SQLDeveloper, data shows up
fine.
Inserting using Witango (osx/apache/oci), data is not
inserted nor
read properly, its messed up!
I have setup nls_lang/charsert on the osx box and html
header to
utf-8 but still no go. urlencoding/decoding sometimes work (for
some characters) but not for all (ex: smart quotes).
Any ideas on fixing this?
thanks!
