Steve,
Here’s an explanation I recently sent to another customer, it should help your understanding of the products. I will get some of this on the web site soon. The Standard Edition can only run on a server with 4 or fewer CPU cores (not just physical CPUs), and you can’t run multiple licenses on the same server. The Advanced Edition will completely use all processing power that is available on the server, up to 32 CPU cores. The Advanced Edition also allows multiple instances (services) of Witango to be run on the same server. Witango 6 is compatible with and supported on Windows Server 2008 32-bit and 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit only. Currently Witango 6 operates in 32-bit mode only. We hope to publish a 64-bit native version of Witango Server in 2011. Since Witango is a 32-bit application, it can only address 2 GB of memory. If you have a server with >2 GB of memory, and you would like to have Witango make use of that memory, then using the Advanced Edition and starting up multiple services (daemons) will allow you to utilize that memory. There are three benefits to using multiple services, either on multiple servers (n Standard Editions) or on one larger machine (1 Advanced Edition) 1) Addressing more CPU power and Memory 2) Fault tolerance, having one service (or server) go down does not bring down your site 3) Variable configurations, if you have 2 websites that need different configurations, you can setup each Witango service specific to the site it serves. The primary difference between multiple Standard Editions vs. a single Advanced Edition is that the former requires multiple small servers, whereas the later supports one large server. The Standard Edition is intended to be used in virtualized environments, blades, and entry-level servers. In the future, there may be other features or functionality that is limited to the Advanced Edition. I can all but guarantee that Witango 6.0 will solve whatever hang-ups you might be having. If, after you upgrade, problems persist, I will work to correct them. Notable problems that I might not be able solve are mostly external, such as having a slow database or email server, overloading the server, relying on external sites (web services), or having other software on the server consume resources (eg. rogue PHP script). The Advanced Edition would allow for two powerful configurations: 1) You could create 4 Witango Application Services, run them in a load balanced pool and provide better uptime since one service going down/restarting would not affect the overall pool 2) You could actually install 40 or 50 services and map each customer’s website to their own unique service. This may sound like a ‘crazy idea’, but it actually allows you to extend isolation to the customer/website level, which may be helpful or useful. In my own setup, I do a little of both. I hope that helps. Because we feel it’s important that functionality is constant between the Editions, the only real distinction is one of scalability. I am planning on moving all of my web hosting clients to a new Windows 2008 server, probably with 4 CPU's max. I'm currently running a Windows 2003 box about 5 years old with Witango 5.0 and 2 CPU's. My main problem with the existing server is Witango freezing up. It's usually once every 2 or 3 days, but in the busy times around Christmas for some of my ecommerce clients it locks up 3 or 4 times a day. I'm planning on getting the Standard version of Witango 6 for my new setup. My question is, to those who have similar setups (about 70 - 80 small business clients, half of whom probably run some witango functions), is the Standard version of Witango 6.0 on Windows 2008 probably going to solve most of my freezing problems? Would there be a huge advantage with the Advanced version? There's not a lot of info on the Witango site as far as the differences and pros and cons of each version. Thanks for any help and advice you may have! -- Steve ************************************************** Steve Briggs Wow Pages Portland, Maine Longmont, Colorado 207-761-2450 888-325-5907 [email protected] ************************************************** _____ To unsubscribe from this list, please send an email to [email protected] with "unsubscribe witango-talk" in the body. ---------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list, please send an email to [email protected] with "unsubscribe witango-talk" in the body.
