I found tntdb @ http://www.tntnet.org/tntdb.html to be a real nice package. 
Almost as good as Trolltechs. It will connect to different flavors of 
databases. You will still have to create your own objects to connect the 
database to the widgets.

 For xml I use tinyxml @ www.sourceforge.net/projects/tinyxml
It is small and has a simple interface.
