The biggest reason I'd suggest otherwise is that we ran into 
badly-diluted "Google juice" for a long time with v2 doc urls getting 
top ranking for years after v3.0 was released. I don't know if there's 
an SEO technique we could use to fix that.

Python points the major-version doc path to the latest stable release 
from that series (like you're suggesting). And they have the same problem.

Maybe there's no fix and the best you can do is link to newer versions 
from old doc...
