(Some installs of XP show the folder as a "Shared Documents" shell folder at the root of the explorer tree - but that folder isn't shown in most situations it seems.) Since there will be user-created content left in those document folders anyway, I don't mind "abandoning" the desktop shortcut, as users may still want to get at those documents to back them up or move them to another system. I'll try using an empty GUID for the shortcut component and see what happens... Thanks for the suggestions.
