Thanks for your reply. But how about the first part of my question? Carlos' repo contains lots of important bug fixes and also new features which have been in use by many of us for a while now. If we consider the 'next' branch 'unstable' and the 'crm' branch 'testing' there still needs to be a timeframe for integration into 'stable'. If this does not happen I see the danger of (a) people simply abandoning WM, (b) developers and distros simply forking their own versions of WM each with different bug fixes and feature sets or (c) both of the above. We are in a lucky situation to have an active community of developers fixing bugs and contributing new features. But this is nothing one should take for granted.
