Hello all,

instead of releasing yet another huge ISO image, i have just uploaded
the compressed tar archive wmlive-wmaker-env_20120308.tar.gz to the
usual http://sourceforge.net/projects/wmlive/files/ download area.

It contains the user specific Window Maker configuration files, and a
few related scripts, which are used to define the user environment for
Window Maker Live. It also comes with all the icons in the package which
are referenced by the configuration. Furthermore, the GTK2-Step theme
for all GTK2 based applications is also part of the archive.

If i haven't overlooked any important details, this should basically
work as a stand alone configuration, at least for any Debian based
setup. It wouldn't really surpise me if, with some environment specific
modifications, it would also work in any other distribution environment.

The configuration definitions are based on a few basic assumptions,
which should be fulfilled as a bare minimum if this setup is expected to
work out of the box:

- The first assumption is the presence of the Debian menu system (also
available in Ubuntu).

- The configured standard terminal program is gnome-terminal

- As basic text editor the presence of mousepad is assumed.

- The default file manager is supposed to be thunar.

- For quite a few dialog boxes the gxmessage program is absolutely
necessary (old xmessage is not any good replacement for it at all)

Furthermore, instead of the Gnome based nm-applet for network access the
desktop environment agnostic wicd-client program is used. As everything
else, you are invited to modify the used programs to your own liking.

Don't worry, the Window Maker menu is ready for being freely edited with
the WPrefs menu editor. In any case, you really should take your time to
go through it, because the root menu delivered with this package offers
some advanced features not present in any other Window Maker release
package, and which you really would like to know about. Trust me.

First of all there is the menu based AutoStart configuration, which
saves you (almost) from manually editing the monolithic Window Maker
autostart script just to enable (or disable) an entry. Additionally i
have implemented a small backup and restore facility for the Window
Maker configuration files and directories, which served me well during
my own testing.

Rodolfo, the above described user root menu features might also be very
welcome by users of your wonderful Debian package! Please check it out!

Please also note in the Window Maker root menu the almost identical, but
not quite, first two sub menus from the top. The first one is the
standard unmodified Debian menu, in all its primitive glory, while the
second one is a very customized, streamlined version of it. The specific
menu customizations for the affected packages are inside the ~/.menu
folder.

Debian's menu system is really nice and flexible - if you are aware of
its possibilities. To my (limited) knowledge, still no specialized
graphical menu editor for the Debian menu system is available. This
really is a shame since the Debian menu system has lots of advantages
over the Gnome/Ubuntu/XFCE4 menu systems but, unfortunately, it just
is not as easily accessible for normal users, which is only due to the
lack of a suitable menu editor.

Maybe this would be a nice little project for one of the aspiring WINGs
programmers somewhere out there in the Window Maker user crowd?

As always, feedback, critique, appraisal, Bitcoins, Paypal, and last not
least, patches are very welcome.

Enjoy!
