this defintely sounds like you are using Window Makr Live. Which exact
version does this issue refer to?

The issue you describe should be valid only for one of the older
releases before 2012-04-01, and has actually been fixed since this very
release.

If you examine the contents of the .xsession-errors file in your home
directory, you should find an error message which might explain the
reason for this behavior.

A meaningful bug report should also contain the version of the affected
software, or in the case of "Window Maker Live", the release version of
the ISO image.
