Hi Michael,
I happen to be the current GWorkspace maintainer
The version packaged in Debian doesn't seem to do much useful. I just tried to
double click on a simple photo and I get this error

Wow, that's bad. I assure you that it works here :)
Would mind do the following:
1) select the file you want to preview
2) open Tools->Inspector->Tools This should report all registered
Applications which may open the filetype you want. You should have one
or more. I suppose in your case Preview.app is the default
3) try double-click there with the different applications
They all should open! Or does it work for some yes and for some not?
I'd reccoment using PRICE.app and GSPdf if available under Debian. Those
are currently maintained, if Debian will ever update their old packages
(open bug reports, make pressing!). I don't know if Preview and ViewPDF
are, they are not under my "umbrella".
However, here we are really digressing out of wmaker's scope. THese are
mostly Debian packaging problem of gnustep applications or perhaps bugs
in GS apps, it depends.
